Murmur privacy policy

Murmur turns your voice into text on your own computer. Nothing you say or type is sent to me or to anyone else.

Murmur for Windows · Effective 30 October 2026 · Publisher: Morten Brudvik

What Murmur is

Murmur is a free voice-typing app for Windows that lives in the system tray. You hold a hotkey, speak, and the words are typed into whatever app you are using. Speech is recognised on your computer with OpenAI’s open-source Whisper model.

What is collected

Murmur collects and transmits nothing about you.

Your microphone

Murmur records from your microphone only while you hold its hotkey, or between the two taps of hands-free mode. The recording is turned into text on your computer and then discarded. If you switch on Keep audio recordings in Settings (it is off by default), each recording is saved on your computer next to its dictation, and nowhere else.

Data stored on your computer

Murmur keeps the following on your computer only, in its folder under your user profile’s local app data:

Uninstalling Murmur removes this data.

The one network request

The first time Murmur starts, it downloads its speech model (about 1.6 GB) from Hugging Face. Like any download, that request shows your IP address to Hugging Face; it carries no audio, text or personal information. See Hugging Face’s privacy policy. After that, Murmur works without an internet connection.

Children

Murmur is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone.

Changes

If Murmur ever starts handling data differently, this page will be updated before that version is released, and the date above will change.
